Ice Dams

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roofs shingles and into the structures interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travellers.com. To spot ice dams inside, “check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceiling of exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the rood membrane.”

Fortunately, you can help prevent the water damage that floods can cause your home.  Here are several flood control fixes you can make to help manage storm water runoff and prevent flood damage to your home:

  1. Slope soil away from your home's foundation.               
  2. Clean out gutters and downspouts in the fall and spring.  You can also use downspout extensions to carry water farther away from your foundation.           
  3. Plug holes or cracks in you gutters, downspouts and downspout extensions.                                                
  4. Set up a downspout to empty into a rain barrel.            
  5. Look for holes or cracks in your foundation and completely fill them.                                                  
  6. If your home is prone to flooding, having a sump pump installed is the most convenient flood control.      
  7. Review with all family members how to shut off utilities in an emergency.

THERE ARE 3 BASIC CATEGORIES OF WATER Category 1: Clean water originates from a sanitary source such as a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. However, it may not always remain clean after it meets other surfaces or materials. Category 2: Gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. It may contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological). Category 3: Black water is highly contaminated and filled with pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster; Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

THE 4 PRIMARY CLASSIFICATIONS OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption and evaporation. It affects only part of a room or area, or larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture. Little or no wet carpet and/or cushion is present.
  • Class 2 involves a large amount of water, absorption and evaporation. It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad). Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves the greatest amount of water, absorption and evaporation. Water may have come from overhead.  Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushions and subfloor in virtually all the entire area is saturated.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations. Wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (eg. hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete and stone). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

The Do's and Don'ts of Surviving a Flood

Flooding can happen at anytime and anywhere as a result of rain, snow coastal storms, storm surges and the overflow of dams and water systems. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down and 1 foot of moving water is enough to sweep your vehicle away. Remember the following:

  • Depending on where you are and the impact and warning time of the flooding, go to a previously identified safe location.
  • If you are told to evacuate, leave immediately. Never drive around barricades that local responders have used to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas.
  • Listen to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions.
  • Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn around.
  • Stay off bridges over fast moving water. Bridges can be wash away without warning.
  • If your vehicle is trapped in fast moving water, stay inside unless the water is rising inside the vehicle, then seek safety on the roof.
  • If trapped in a building, go to the highest level. Do not go into a closed attic where you may be trapped by rising floodwater. Go to the roof if necessary and signal for help.
  • Always remember to listen to authorities for information and instructions during a flood situation and return home only when they say it is safe to do so.

Floating (Magic?) Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, then it would be safe to say that one of your worst nightmares would be flooding or a leak that would soak and stain all your carpet. In this case, after water is properly extracted, the rest of the drying process can be continued. Whether we are placing air movers or you are renting your own, carpet can be “floated” where air movers are placed to blow air under the carpet. The air mover can be clipped to a section of the lifted carpet and the air creates this effect that is similar to the magic carpet in “Aladdin,” creating this flowing movement. If you are doing this on your own, make sure that you don’t have too many air movers putting air under the carpet at the same time. If there are too many air movers, the “floating” movement can become too aggressive and the carpet hitting the ground repeatedly can result in the tac strip separating from the backing. Removing Moisture from Materials

When our crew approaches a water job, we evaluate many different variables. All of which are very important, but there are two variables that we look at the most: type of material and the degree of wetness. This means that we will evaluate each material's permeability, the ability for water to pass through the material, dampness, the moisture movement. The liquids will be presented in one of these forms.

Surface Water

Like the name, you can find this type of moisture on the material's surface. It is a visible liquid and can evaporate. When mitigating this type of moisture, you must remove the moisture using mechanical extraction. The next component needed to be addressed: airflow, which helps control temperature and humidity, which helps evaporate any remaining moisture.

Free Water

Unlike surface water, the name of this absorption doesn't give you many clues on how to find it in a material. Before the moisture can form a chemical bond to the material, free water happens. You can find this type of moisture in cavities, open pores, and other air spaces within the material. When mitigating this form of moisture, you will want to use lower humidities and warmer temperatures. By maintaining these factors, you ensure that the moisture is going to evaporate.  

Bound Water

More work is needed to fully mitigate this type of moisture material as this form is when the moisture has made chemical bonds. You will have to release it to get the moisture out of the material when this happens. Unlike the other categories, controlling the airflow won't help remove the chemical bonds. The moisture will dry fastest when it is warmed. The essential factor to keep in mind is maintaining the surrounding humidity. Keep in mind that this type will take the longest to dry out of all categories.

Prevent Ice Dams From Occuring

According to Familyhandyman.com, one-third of the heat loss in the average home is due to hot air rising through the ceiling into the attic. If you’ve ever had to go into an attic on a hot summer day, you know that the attic holds in hot air like a sauna. With the hot air compressed under the roof, it causes the roof to warm up and melt the layer of snow on top. Although the attic heat warms up the top of the roof, there is still that cold edge around the home that the heat doesn’t reach. This cold edge is where ice dams build up. The melted snow flows down the roof until it hits the ice dam where it freezes, building up an even bigger dam. The trick to keeping ice dams off of your roof and water damage out of your home this winter is by keeping your attic and roof cold enough to prevent mass melting of the snow. Here are some tricks to keep your roof cold.

·      Close up attic bypasses

Most of the heat that escapes to the attic is due to cracks near light fixtures, plumbing pipes, chimneys, or cracks in drywall. Stopping some of those leaks may be tough to reach, but plugging them up with caulk or foam can prevent the hot air from rising into the attic and heating the roof.

·      Measure your attic insulation level

Check the depth of the insulation covering your attic to make sure that they meet building code. If there is less than 8 inches, you most likely will need to add more insulation. Most building codes require 12-14 inches of fiberglass or cellulose.

·      Increase roof ventilation

Placing vents into your roof will help ventilate the warm air and allow some cool, outdoor air to seep in, keeping the attic at a reasonable temperature. Adding vents can be a tricky task, but if you have experienced ice dams during past winters, try to focus on the areas where they have built up previously.

Cold temperatures are inevitable in Illinois. When freezing temperatures hit, here are some helpful prevention tips:

  • When you know temperatures will be dipping below freezing, allow water to run in all the sinks at a slow, constant drip. It only needs to trickle, and that tiny amount of water will keep the water moving through the pipes and prevent them from freezing.
  • Open up the cabinet doors in the bathrooms and kitchen. This will allow the heat from the home to circulate and warm up the pipes.
